L ike A Fading Shadow, taking its title from Psalm 11 (“My days are like a fading shadow; and I am withered like grass”), is my fifth Antonio Muñoz Molina book after Sepharad, A Manuscript of Ashes, In Her Absence, and In the Night of Time. Like a Fading Shadow - Like a Fading Shadow audiobook, by Antonio Muñoz Molina The year is and James Earl Ray has just shot Martin Luther King, Jr. For two months he evades authorities, driving to Canada, securing a fake passport, and flying to London, all while relishing the media's confusion about his location and his image on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

Like A Fading Shadow is a masterful novel, part-memoir, part-invention, that becomes an exquisite meditation on writing, an embodiment of literature as both creature and creator of mind.       Overall I leave ‘Like a Fading Shadow’ with mixed feelings. First up it must be said that it is beautifully written, and lovingly translated – it is a fluid and, at times, quite meditative read which covers themes like the nature of literature, and the cost of following one’s vocation. Like a Fading Shadow might be seen as a mongrel kind of auto-fiction (lately in style through writers like Karl Ove Knausgaard). Through frequent info-dumps and editorializing on the nature of the novel, Molina seems to be trying to construct a novel that writes itself, drawing on the raw materials of history and of the author’s own life.
